Why would he need to hand money over to his Mum if she and her husband are directors of a company that's clearly doing pretty well and bringing in plenty of cash?

My feelings also. I'm quite shocked actually after the "working class lad who's been a plumber since he was 15" line, obviously trying to give the impression they struggled, when it seems quite the opposite.
