All these brilliant films he has been in, they were great because of other people. He didn't get any awards for them or even any nominations. He was a replaceable secondary character in these films. His moderate fame comes primarily from being associated with great films. Whether you like him in the house or not, that's what he is. So let's not make out he's some big Hollywood star. He's not.

He is a Hollywood star whether you want to think it or not. He was one of the main characters in Reservoir Dogs, Infact the scene that everyone remembers and talks about was a scene with Michael only (and the ear). No one is claiming he's in Deniro or Pacinos league but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a famous actor and has had a very successful movie career
