Mine's black and grey not colour, I prefer the tones of shaded tattoos to colour also.
The best thing to do is just collect a LOAD of ideas together, take them to your tattooist and discuss with him to get an outcome that you're happy with. If they're talented they'll easily come up with a design to incorporate all the elements you're looking for.
This tattoo for me, each object has meaning, so I researched tattoos for the different meanings and found that certain objects/items represented them (i.e. - the diamond represents wealth and success) and asked her if she could come up with a design incorporating everything. We had difficulty though and eventually found a design on Google I loved (this design but it was MASSIVE in the picture and in colour, I wanted to scale it down so I could add to it in future) so really it was back to square one ha!
It's good to design your own though because at least then it's original!
