Battle Royale is one of the best films ever made, you'll either understand it or you won't. It's a film of extremes and it is over the top but it's purposely played like that as it's a satire of the youth culture of Japan. As much as I love THG I think Battle Royale has more going for it under the hood.

As far as comparisons go, there's similar books and films that predate both of them and I'd say the THG has more in common with The Running Man due to the television angle as well as the futuristic dystopian setting. The only comparisons between THG and BR is that they are both about a game of death involving children. The stories are quite different apart from that.

What was the purpose of the games in BR? Why did the kids not know about them? Where did Mitsuko and chigusa get all the changes of clothes? How did Shuyas dad know he was going into the games? If all the kids were put on concious by eating the cookies, why was the adult on the bus wearing a mask?

What was the purpose of the games in BR?
In the films it was to scare the adults into compliance since in the film Japan was falling apart due to kids boycotting school and the adults not following the governments lead and such. In the books though it's just the mad government's idea of a bit of fun if I remember right.

Why did the kids not know about them?
It's never said but since it's a political act you could always pass it off that most kids don't keep up with politics. In the books though I THINK it was a secret event, It's been a while since I read it.

Where did Mitsuko and chigusa get all the changes of clothes?
They were on a school trip and were allowed to keep their things, the island was also a town that had purposely been evacuated so they could have taken some clothes from the houses.

How did Shuyas dad know he was going into the games?
He didn't? He comitted suicide two years prior due to the fact that he was struggling to cope since he was unemployed.

If all the kids were put on concious by eating the cookies, why was the adult on the bus wearing a mask?
They were knocked out by gas.

I prefer THGs reasoning behind the games

Why did the kids not know about them?
Ok but if no one knows about them then it doesn't teach them any sort of lesson

Where did Mitsuko and chigusa get all the changes of clothes?
lol, thanks that really bothered me all the way through the film

How did Shuyas dad know he was going into the games?
haha, ok I totally picked that bit up wrong, I thought he'd killed himself because his son was going in the games and that's what his message to him was about? must have drunk too much wine!

If all the kids were put on concious by eating the cookies, why was the adult on the bus wearing a mask?
Again, I'm blaming the wine for that one

Thanks though, I did find the film hard to follow, I didn't think they explained things very well in it and then I found it hard to sympathise with any of the kids

Spoiler:

With Battle Royale though the film isn't so much about the 'why' but how people would react in that situation and how friendships and alliances would collapse under paranoia and stress (the Lighthouse scene is a good example of this). It's just meant to be more of a snapshot of a situation rather then a complete saga which is what The Hunger Games is. Different styles of story telling.

THG is all about rebelling against a corrupt government and such, BR is more about how the situation would affect and change people.

As for the lesson stuff, It's not meant to teach the kids anything since it'd be pointless since only one would survive It's a scare tactic to keep the adults in control since threatening someone's kids would be a very good way of keeping them in line.
