It's a common sense. The fact she didn't know this shows me her black friends didn't educate her on the word properly or she made up that she uses it all the time.

Its not common sense, common sense is inherant you dont need friends of any colour to teach you that.
Its mixed messages, it was acceptable in her social group.
If it is so derogatory and so offensive why is it used?
You don't get any other groups using a discriminatory word in general conversation.
