I think prostitution is given a bad rap. Ignoring the drug culture amongst prostitutes in the UK, and instead looking at Amsterdam, it's a very safe, well run operation. The prostitutes aren't ruled by pimps. They aren't doing it for drugs, at least for the majority anyway. They're doing it to pay off rent or debts or, hell, because they enjoy it. It's a business transaction, it's not like you're hiring yourself out to be intimate with someone, you're just selling your private parts as an object and you name your price. You can refuse customers and you can decide what you want to offer as a service. The police are there within 30 seconds if something goes wrong, all the girls have a buzzer they can press to get them there. A guy who slept in my hostel room there came back from just having had sex with one of them and he told us what it was like. He said it was mechanical and weird but it was a worthwhile experience because he said he'd never do it again and he saw the cold distinction between intimacy and sex. These women don't care about you, they care about your money, so I think it's something I would probably do if push came to shove and I needed the money and it was regulated here like it is in Amsterdam. It's insane how backwards the UK can be - if we legalised prostitution and gave prostitutes better conditions to work in, we'd see less people on the streets and less of a drug problem I think.
Yeah, If you ignore the drugs, physical and mental abuse, human trafficking, exploitation, moral and etical issues prostitution is a good idea......

Kizzy - read the rest of the post - the reason for such explotation that exists in lands where prostitution is illegal is because it is not regulated: that therefore allows physical / mental torture / abuse / non control - it allows it to happen.

if it was regulated : such issues would decline rapidly.

I can't see it working ever, It would simply remove the safeguards in place currently for victims.
Think we will have to agree to disagee here

Escort agencies of course do in fact provide the service of prostitution that is "left up to the individual" as they do not advertise sex for cash. There are plenty of willing people in the escort industry. There are also high class prostitutes that offer their services to business men in swanky hotels. Ones that run their businesses from home and advertise in telephone boxes. Street workers. Many kinds. I am not sure I understand how legalised prostitution/brothels would "remove the safeguards in place currently for victims". Could you please explain?

If you have no desire to discuss the ins and outs of the sex industry then why come onto the thread at all then? The subject title is very clear as has been the replies and the how the thread evolved.

It's seems that when it comes to debate Kizzy - you seem to have this "just coz I said so" reply tactic, but can never actually validate or offer anything to substantiate and back up your views. It actually kills debates rather than enriches them.

Again my view is attacked.....I do not agree with prostitution...Im not going to apologise for that or enter into a prolonged debate about it.....Just have the good grace to accept my stance is all I ask!

So you make a statement that makes no sense to me and you don't wish to explain yourself? I sort of got the idea you were avoiding the question, that's why I re-posted.

Prostitution is always going to exist and there is always going to be a call for it. Don't you think it would be a lot better if it was properly regulated and prostitutes were able to trade in a safe environment off the streets, so they are not ripped off and abused by their pimps? Also with access to contraception, sexual health checks and screenings and away from residential areas where they can attract all kinds of low life?
