Child abuse is a terrible thing and the fact the stepfather was abused himself only goes to show the kind of consequences it can have.

I notice though the comments on there aren't entirely dissimilar to those on a particular hate-fuelled, reactionary, national tabloid. Always irks me that does.

Meh, I see it as an excuse more than a consequence. A lot of people were abused as kids and they dont all grow up to do the same thing. And some people who WERENT abused as kids will go on to abuse kids at some point in their life too.

Exactly. Bad things happen to people, it's how you deal with it and move forward shows what type of person you are and that's not an excuse to abuse someone else.

Of course they don't, that's why I said 'it can have'. Not always, but sometimes. There's definitely a correlation between the two.

For example, if some parents were to bring their children up until the age of 16 with the belief that you must have sex with children when older, and that that is the 'norm' and what happens, and they were kept away from any kind of institution that would tell them otherwise, then how on earth could they possibly think or act any other way once they'd reached the age of 16? If that's the kind of things that were instilled in them, that's how they're going to act. Same thing with a lot of things, i.e. if you're bullied it can affect your self-esteem for a long time, if you're brought up in a violent community/gang there's a high chance that you're going to end up the same.

It's all about socialisation. It's not the case with everyone, but I think often things like this can have long lasting effects on the victims. That doesn't mean it's excusable of course, but it's not just an issue we should sideline and not take into consideration. And if you ask me...in order to kill someone anyway, or indeed attempt to kill someone or just be plain disgustingly violent, then you've got to have some sort of mental health issue. No sane person does that.
