Child abuse is a terrible thing and the fact the stepfather was abused himself only goes to show the kind of consequences it can have.

Meh, I see it as an excuse more than a consequence. A lot of people were abused as kids and they dont all grow up to do the same thing. And some people who WERENT abused as kids will go on to abuse kids at some point in their life too.
