There was absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. It took him the better part of a minute to explain himself, that's hardly "going on" and nobody told him to stop. If they were too immature to sit and listen to the man justify himself AFTER THEY COMPLAINED (thus virtually requesting as much from him) then they could have simply left the room.

He left the room after making Caroline very uncomfortable and then returned to continue his tyrade of nonsense so yes he did go on and on and Caroline had little choice but to listen.
