Benidict did that as a part of his ideologie that the British public should be more comfortable with their sexuality, like the scandanavian countries. I think he's already said this, but Britain has one of the worst sex-eds, while the highest STIs and the reverse is true in places like Sweden and Norway. He did it on camera, on a show which has benifited from the viewing of many teens in the past few years as an example not to be ashamed of the various ways you can show your sexuality (be it gay, bi, or any other part of the community).
In my opinion he's mature becuase he showed the ability to think ahead, notice something he did not agree with in his society and try and tackle it, and also set up a platform to further his views. So, rather than focusing on the now he's planning for the far future, which is, in my opinion, the mark of maturity.
