There are a lot of sheep and two faced people in the house. Deana is one of the only people in there who truly matches to the beat of her own drum and isn't afraid to be herself or speak her mind.
The way she's handled confrontations with Conor, Arron, Lydia, etc is what makes her so great. She's never backed down, she's stood up for herself in every situation. A prime example is when Conor/Luke S tried to stitch her up and accuse her of being a gold digger by asking a question and expecting a particular answer, Deana knew exactly what they were doing and confronted them. She is very, very smart and very aware. And - when she straight up told Luke S that his relationship was fake and disgusting, that was another great moment for Deana. Most other housemates would backtrack and deny it to avoid confrontation. Deana takes confrontation head on. And at the same time, she still maintains class and dignity and ALWAYS comes out looking the best.
She is also a very fun and funny person, which unfortunately isn't shown on the highlights a lot, but you can see it from numerous of the YT uploaded clips.
To me, it's very clear to see why Deana is so popular. She's one through the biggest journey this series and has been the talking point of 80% of the storylines in the house. You can't deny her role in this series as being a massive one.

See from what I've seen it's Conor, Arron and whoever else has had a problem with her that have made her role a large one, she was pretty much invisible before that from what I remember. Yeah, all what you said is fine, it's good that she stands her ground and isn't afraid to join in with confrontation, you know me, I like that, but she doesn't seem to cause enough of it, other people instigate it themselves, and she doesn't create any storylines herself either, again people do it for her. From what I can see other than the odd moment here and there, she doesn't contribute as much as everyone seems to make out. Of course she comes off looking better in practically 99% of all the arguments she's had, but as vile as Arron and Conor were, they were the ones that stirred all the sh*t up and gave us all talking points, not Deana - she wouldn't have done that on her own without their help.
I guess her being popular doesn't surprise me, the nice, 'safe' ones always are, the thing that's confused me the most I guess is the widespread support from people whom usually wouldn't support housemates like her, I find it baffling and I think that's why I put it down to none other than sympathy and as you said yourself, supporting how she's 'handled everything'. I think it was Jords that promised I'd like her in that thread I made, so I was expecting a lot and she really hasn't produced it for me. I've tried to like her (and I do as a person) but I just can't, and the support does baffle me.
