You can see Gary's been reading from the script of Simon Cowell. Slate the joke act and look like the bad guy so that they pick up votes and make it through the first few weeks, and then finally "come around" to them, praise them and that week they get voted off. It happens every single year; the joke act pretty much separates the forgettable from the potential stars (or what X Factor bosses see as potential stars) - Rylan's gonna last for another couple of weeks I think; there are still one or two boring acts that are surely hovering just above the bottom two every week.
