I wasn't convinced that a price hike would have much effect, what is needed is to stop ridiculous special offers in supermarkets,
I also would make it that alcohol has to be sold from a separate part of the store as are cigarettes and tobacco.

Stop the piling up too of beer and wine deals staring at you as soon as you enter the store, also stop having a drinks display at nearly every aisle on the store too.
I was watching a couple with young children,one was toddler and in the trolley the other 2 were walking alongside the trolley, in went alcohol just like it was general shopping.

A price hike may be necessary in the future but it really is the supermarkets who need to be made to sell alcohol more responsibly in my view.

Not true at all, licensing laws are a lot stricter now and they're more enforced, places are also now far more stringent at ensuring everyone is checked for ID buying alcohol and punishments are more severe for those who do serve anyone underage

And in any case, bars won't be affected by minimum price legislation, and it's not as though 24 hour super markets have come into existance purely to feed peoples alcoholism

ID has little to do with it.. it has always been required in pubs and bars and youths get an over 18 to buy it in shops as they always have no difference there much.
The bars have nothing to do with this to be fair, it is the alcohol companies and the supermarkets working together.
Ihave never said that 24hr shopping was invented for the sale of alcohol, you may not remember that they would barricade the drinks aisle after 11pm initially, before the pressur to change the law on that.
I agree it must be so frustrating to hear that something you don't have a problem with and enjoy responsibly is being tampered with, but there must be due cause for there to be calls to intervene here?
It is just a bit suss, I can't help but suspect the PM was leaned on to drop this, as in New York this week there was to be a ban on fizzy drinks sold above a certain capacity after it was found that large quantities were contributing to an obesity epidemic.
It was thrown out at the 11hr...
Business is business, and public health will always come second to that...

Anyway I don't deny that the UK has problems with binge drinking, but I don't think this is the right way to tackle it. I can see why that fizzy drink ban was thrown out as well, people just don't like the State bringing in legislation to punish them for the problems of others

Ah well it may be their discretion? will have a looksy in a min, what is the right way? When a soloution is rejected they can't just say 'oh well feck it' lets go for a beer, there must be a plan B?
What would you suggest matt? I'm not very positive when it comes to the UK and alcohol, we seem to have a terrible relationship with it.
Our inner city centres at weekends are pretty gruesome, (yes, I'm as guilty as anyone) not a pariah haha!
