as far as we know he did show up but just didn't go through with it because obviously Locke would then have known he was a guy

this, imagine having that happen to you, it would be completely awful. to think a fake ID was created all based around you, and having some stranger looking through all your pictures and using them for 3 years to do this..

But in all honesty though I think if we've all been duped by someone for a number of years (twice actually) and now this seems to be taking quite a serious sinister and worrying turn, I think we all have a right to some sort of an explanation and closure, whether that's in ten minutes or in a few days. It's only going to make people continually speculate otherwise. May as well just clear it up, being open about stuff like this is the best way, people will just move on then.
