Usually complete silence and darkness, as others have mentioned. I leave the window open if it's hot and stuffy, though (I quite like the feeling of wrapping up to get warm after being initially chilly), but shut it again as the noise of the birds wakes me up.

Yeah I normally have the window open when I first go to bed then end up having to shut it about 8/9 in the morning when it starts getting noisy outside, people should show a bit more respect for us late sleepers

I'm easy,once tired I can fall asleep no matter what is going on around me but the one thing I can't stand is heat.
In Summer,I need to have some cool air coming my way in order to ease into sleep.

I usually can't sleep without watching the news or listening to music. I turn all off before I sleep though.

I agree about the rain, it is very soothing.

And the same about noise, I much prefer silence. And would only keep the window open during the hot days of the summer.
