a petition to the DVLA to make all 60 year olds reapply for there driving licence 15.05.13
listen carefully please, with your driving i will grade, OAP's this is no tease, so please turn up your hearing aid. this review is vital, to rule out failure is the plight, do you want a ALVD, (DVLA) well a just your eye sight. i do understand about discrimination, there is a "law" for "ageism", but its a blatant Criminalization, if the "old" can not take criticism. what needs to happen is a "age", a number which apply's to all motorists, then everyone is on the same page, fare and equal will lead to less visits to the florists. common sense as normal, to the DVLA i will poem advice, my contact will be strictly formal, please sign my petition if my idea is wise. (please sign this petition and forward it to as many as you can and spread it round, as it can only be common sense that as you get older, you need to reply for your licence as of all the changes that have taken place and to also keep you up to speed on whats happening on our roads. http://www.change.org/en-GB/petition...riving-licence ) |

I don't think this will be very popular, what about all those who drive for a living? As long as your hearing and vision are fine, having said that regular reaction tests for all drivers might be a good idea?

Over here when you're over 70 you have to get a medical cert and reapply for your licence every 3 years. I don't think that's necessary for 60 year olds, especially since you're expected to work till 67

Same here Niamh. I do think asking for 60 is pushing it somewhat.

Seeing that the vast majority of accidents and road deaths are caused by young male drivers, maybe we should raise the age of males driving a car to say... 25? Otherwise it just wouldn't be fair. Woud it. Set up a petition for that and I'll sign it.

What nonsense.........!!!! Most 60 year olds are perfectly capable of driving and are probably the safest group of drivers on the road.
Sure....ask for compulsory medicals when the age of 75 is reached but 60....no way !!! |

My dad who is 51 says he would not be able to pass a test today as they were so much easier when he passed, says he wouldnt have a clue with all the extras added in now. He would be a bit buggered

I do think there should be an upper age limit though, when people do have to take the test again. My aunty was driving until she was 82, despite not being able to walk and stuff as her legs seized up occasionally. Now I do not think people like her should be on the road. But that comes more under medical reasons than anything else.

Maybe 25 is too high as people may need to have to be able to drive to be in work. Limiting that to 25 is perhaps too high but I would go with the raising of age certainly from what it is now. Re-testing and all else at 60, is far too young too for me though, as Vicky said people may need to drive to work and also have to be able to for their work too. The Govt is making it that retirement age will be 67 in the future, so any re-evaluation of peoples driving skills would have be a lot later than 60 for me to support or want it. |

I don't think you can compare the minimum or maximum age because older people (I'm not talking 60, I'm talking more about 75+) are naturally going to be more dangerous because of declining senses and mobility, younger people are perfectly capable of driving and doing so sensibly if they are just instilled with a sense of responsibility, which a lot of younger drivers do admittedly lack, but wouldn't be fair to punish the majority for the stupidity of a minority, particularly as cars start becoming more necessary from 17 onwards. Plus like Vicky said they have actually done a lot to make the tests harder now and it is more thorough than in other countries
I doubt raising the age would change much anyway, I'd say younger people are more prone to accidents out of inexperience and because they've not been on the roads for long which would be the case no matter when people start learning Last edited by MTVN; 15-05-2013 at 12:34 PM. |

I feel tests should be ongoing throughout, maybe at 7-10 year intervals? As you say the need for people to remain in employment is more important, to make sure all remain competent drivers re-evaluation would be beneficial.

Old people cost me at least 1minute 45 seconds a day by being stuck behind them on the roads. I find this unacceptable.

Limiting the numbers of male passengers allowed probably would. We used to do some crazy things in cars. I think young males are especially prone to feeling invincible. |
