I think we are definitely more sensitive to criticism of people like us or people that we relate to. Especially if the criticism fits into stereotypes. For instance to call Dan bitchy clearly strikes a different chord because there is a stereotype of gay men being bitchy. In the same way if there was a muslim being criticized for being anti-woman or sexist, it would be more sensitive because there is a stereotype that muslims are sexist.
