Default Do you think we support HMs who are similar to ourselves in some way...

..or similar to our friends etc, because we are drawn to people we can relate to more easily..?....

Yes, I could relate to Aaron and also Arron last year, I also saw a bit of myself in Ben Duncan too in his series.
This series I would likely be very like Dan in the house, like him I like to poke around as to issues and keep going over them, so my answer is yes.

..I think though for me, Dan is obviously quite inquisitive/probing by nature or because of his job..?..that part is ok but he does have an arrogant/condescending way of putting things across and I wouldn't say that part was anything like you at all Joey..the complete opposite...

I can be like a dog with a bone at times Ammi.

I agree Dan's past job and also the intense training he has had is a feature as to how he is and acts, then again I thought about being in the Police so I guess had I done so, I may have had to acquire some of that arrogance to do the job effectively.
I don't and wouldn't hold any of that against Dan in that case.

I think in any event you need some arrogance to survive in the BB house too, even poor Ben Duncan was seen as arrogant and condescending by many.

..I think that Ben Duncan had an amusing arrogance..a kind of 'where's the en suite and what time is breakfast usually delivered'? type thing, whereas Dan's is more 'I'm completely smug and slightly better than you all because I'm such and expert at reading people/situations, so you're all wrong and I'm right..'...way...but yeah, there are elements of Arron in him, but for me not in such an amusing or endearing way and that for me is important as well...he doesn't have enough balance to his personality to even walk in Arron's shadow...

That is just it though, I don't see the nasty smugness from Dan.

Had I been a housemate this series.
I would have likely sat up all night going on about how right I had been as to Michael, if I had so quickly reached the near spot on conclusions Dan had come to as to him.
Anyway, I do see a bit of myself in Dan and the others as I said above.
Unless someone does something really cruel, heartless and deliberately nasty,I can live with arrogance but I haven't seen Dan do any of those yet.

Actually, funnily enough, another housemate I could relate to was Rex,he was also seen as really arrogant, maybe it is something I would love to acquire,a more determined arrogance.

...Rex is quite a good example as well as Ben Ducan..maybe it's ok to be arrogant when you're funny with it but less so if you're not..?...hmm, I'll think about that Joey because I don't particularly dislike Dan..(or like him either..)..but I don't find he has any humour about him, so can only see the arrogance/smugness....

By the way Ammi, this thread is turning into our personal chat thread. We will have to make this our hot line.

I think we are definitely more sensitive to criticism of people like us or people that we relate to. Especially if the criticism fits into stereotypes. For instance to call Dan bitchy clearly strikes a different chord because there is a stereotype of gay men being bitchy. In the same way if there was a muslim being criticized for being anti-woman or sexist, it would be more sensitive because there is a stereotype that muslims are sexist.

Me too joey, I will go to great lengths to find the truth, and my degree is in public services
I so far have agreed with all of dans comments so I guess I do align myself with him more than any other HM too, (note to self) it's OK to be right but not to tell people you're right it seems

Well my favourite housemate this year was Sallie and we're nothing alike at all (for one she's a woman), so no, just the ones who entertain me most, and, if female, are fit.

I think so in the same way that we may have favourite characters in scripted TV shows that we can relate to, be it in personality or storyline.

That has nothing to do with what the OP asked. The OP was asking do you like or dislike people based on how much you relate to them. Do you like or dislike someone based on how much they are like you.

If you are a 30 y/o black male are you more likely to like 30 y/o black males on the show, or if you are a 20 y/o str8 female, are you more likely to like 20 y/o str8 females on the show.

That's not what ammi meant, she said people who you or your friends are similar to.
I and others took that to mean personality not age, sex or sexuality...

All of my friends bore me - so no. But myself? Yes.

That's why I supported Aaron from BB12 till the end, because we're so similar - I usually support housemates I can relate to, or housemates that are entertaining.
