I wish that some of the people who dislike him being criticized would balance their arguments with examples of his good qualities, rather than protest that he's 'entertaining', which I purely subjective.

They have done, many times.
I love Dan because he's REAL, he's funny, he's not afraid to just be himself, faults and all.

I love that he sticks up for people when they are treated unfairly whther he likes them or not (like Callum - just one example.)

I love that when HM's are complaining about someone he tries to make excuses for the person they are moaning about to defuse the situation.) This happens countless times but no -one ever mentions it.

I love that he is the first person to comfort someone if they are upset and that the other HM's go to him to talk to and get a hug.

I love that he sometimes seems a bit shy when out of his comfort zone.

I love that he is warm hearted and there is not a malicious bone in his body.

Is that enough to be going on with?
