There's a contestant on Project Runway this year who is deaf, uses hearing aids, but has a signer to make sure he understands the rules every week. If he doesn't understand something, he asks. HE is making a statement, by focusing on what he's there to do instead of making an issue of his deafness. Sam treats his deafness like a selling point. Wouldn't someone who is trying to "stand up" for something be more interested in showing how a deaf person is just as capable, rather than bringing it up as a sob story?
