First strike was a day ban IIRC. Second was a week. Third was permanent

Mind back then it was seriously rare for anyone to even gt a warning, as noone took the piss the way they do now. Its the infraction system thats made people like they are today IMO

Are you joking vicky? I've heard about this place and seen threads where it was all out war on here...
And you say now it takes the piss? If you are judged to have rolled your eyes at someone you get infracted...
Not suggesting any bias (god forbid) but posts are open to interpretation, one moderator may consider a comment 'sniping' and another 'joking'.
That's the problem with infractions, the strikes thing I would have thought would involve more than wone mod and therefore be more objective.

No. Vicky is right. The infraction system is a joke. It was much better when people knew exactly what they could and couldn't get away with.

..I think the thing with the infraction system is that it's not really clear how it works...

What's not clear about it though?

I think the system itself is fine it's just that the points structure could do with changing

..I can't remember which thread Vicky explained it in once, where infractions/bans are dependent on many different things which are taken into consideration....

Don't give them an excuse Vicky.

They're being infracted and banned because they're absolutely atrocious!!!

The reason the 3 strikes system is better is because people were very much aware of where they stood on the forum. There were three blank boxes on every user's profile, and if you were given a warning then one of the boxes would be filled yellow with a black exclamation mark. You knew that if you had done something to earn a warning, you'd better not do it again or you would be getting a second one. It meant that people knew what the limit was. With the infraction system, because it's a rolling system where infractions drop off after a certain period of time, there is just no end to people bickering with each other. People know that they'll be banned for a day or two and then they can come back, keep their head down for a while until the points have expired and then have a go at each other again. It's maddening.

This. I see people infracted for getting around the swear filter but then I see threads where FM's are calling each other 'bitch'. Its hardly consistent.

This isn't actually true tbh.

And one of the reasons members are no longer allowed to see how many points they have, is because some were working out what rules they could break but still not be given enough points to banned iykwim.

I know it might come across like glorifying the olden days; but I really believe the warning system was superior to the infraction system. It would cause a lot of people to stop their petty arguments because most people value being able to post here over being able to have an argument with someone they dislike. With the infraction system, people know that unless they do something outrageous like invade people's privacy or spread hate speech, they'll always be allowed back.

And I'm saying the infraction system is worse than the old system. I didnt say anything about how the infraction system used to work. I've never liked it.
