Default Does anybody find it awkward talking to people you like?

I'm a little drunk right now but ever since splitting up from my fiance a few years back I have found it really difficult to properly interact with people I genuinely like. It's so frustrating especially when I see them then get with somebody and they are happy and I think to myself that could have been me.

I've never been tested but I seriously hope I don't behave how some of the guys behave on TV Shows.

I always overthink everything around them and it's a bit embarrassing, lol. But it's better than trying to act cool or like a dick

..back in the day, yes I did find it awkward, almost impossible really...when I met my OH, I liked him so much, not only because he's gorgeous on the outside..(shallow..)..but also he's just about the kindest, thoughtful, most caring, patient person you could ever meet..but as much as I liked him and liked that he seemed to like me as well...I just completely froze whenever he spoke to me or I just jumbled lots of nonsense sentences.. but I thank goodness he isn't someone who gives up easily...it's just as well that he married me because I don't think I could have gone through that again with someone else...

..it's strange how we just get 'an impression' of people on the internet/forums because I always think of you as someone with lots of confidence, Reece..(not over-confident or anything..)..and obviously you're a lovely looking guy as well...someone who would find it maybe easier than some others would, to talk to someone they liked, sort of thing...

..I always find people generally quite fascinating..not in a weird/dodgy way lol...but personality traits, no matter how they're perceived by others are quite complicated in that it's how we perceive them ourselves...it's like you know how you can see a really beautiful person/a celebrity, say..and when interviewed they will say, oh I feel/felt ugly...and people often think whoa, you're just saying that, that's ridiculous...?...but it doesn't matter what other people see/what the outside appearance is, because people can look in the mirror and see something totally different/nothing but flaws because 'beauty' or feeling beautiful is what they feel about themselves/confidence/self esteem etc....but they give this 'outer appearance' of carrying themselves as if they see the same as others do...I think it's more complicated with personality traits because if you seem confident then people will assume you are and so if you liked someone and found it difficult/awkward to talk to them, then they would probably assume that was because you weren't that interested, maybe....

..hmm, I think I've got so far off topic that, that doesn't even make sense to me lol...I'm having one of those hard to put together thought process mornings, Reece...generally a bit tired atm...

..yeah I know lol...I do tend to overthink things but I've only ever really been 'goofy' once in my life...well there were a few other goofy moments before that but they're very forgettable I guess...anyway, and luckily for me that goofiness worked out ok and he liked me enough to overlook it and marry me anyway....t'was destined, Ian...

..but yeah, I do understand the 'awkwardness' of liking someone in a really liking someone way....

Whenever I saw anybody I liked I always tried to stay away from them. I hated the awkwardness of if you were in a group and she was there too and in your head you keep saying;

"stop looking at her, she'll realise you like her, don't smile just look at someone else, oh God I bet she thinks I'm weird, wow she has nice hair, stop looking she'll realise, you left your source book in class go and get it, she's looking at me she knows, this is so embarrassing get out of here now!"

..I always think that's really funny to watch as an observer, when someone is trying to give the impression/thinks that they're acting all cool and 'I don't care' about how they feel...and it's so obvious/cringe...but kind of quite sweet as well....

Oh what a cute story my friend!

I'm very goofy with the opposite sex. In my younger years this actually was advantageous (read TIBBers) as the lassies would chat me up if interested in me. As Ammi suggested - 2 people can get over it

Still worked at my pensioner age to meet my German lass!

Yeah Ben I think a lot of people get self conscious when they are around someone they like like. If it is "the one" though it will generally work out so don't be looking at these other people and thinking that could have been me because if it meant to be it would be you. When I met my husband I didn't fancy him and acted like a right bitch, and messed him around a bit but he stuck in there (God knows why).

When did this trait first re-emerge?

..I think it's really strange/difficult as a parent sometimes and having to 'observe' the awkwardness from a distance..and stop yourself from saying..'oh why don't you just say this to her/it's obvious she likes you....' etc and realising that unless they ask you, they have to do it for themselves and go through it themselves etc...and as Shaun said, even when they try something different when they really like someone and try to be cool about it..laid back..and they're kind of 'over cool' about it and you're thinking oh, no, that's just going to look all wrong/they'll think you're an idiot and you're not ..show them your 'real' self because it's lovely..etc..it's a weird one..whether they act awkward or 'cool', all you're thinking is please let that other person like them back/feel the same because you know how difficult and 'unnatural' it all is for them...
