I'd say the last tornado that went by me was about 1-3 years ago. It was late at night (about 1 AM) and I was in a pissy mood because I was a teenager that wanted to go to sleep but I had to wait the storm out in the basement (and the siren that was blaring, alerting the town there was a tornado warning, nothing hit the town though,)
At my school they always had a tornado drill once a month or so during the school year.

So you get a fair amount of warning before they form up?

Absolutely.
Tornadoes and cyclones have always fascinated me because how striking and unique they look yet not being too dangerous to the point of your pretty much doomed as soon as you see one. Lighting is another beautiful feature of nature I think with only a tiny hint of danger.
Can't say I'd find a tsunami or a volcanic eruption too enthralling though.
