Metaphorically, Linda has been throwing stones at Jim's head constantly since the show started.

Each time he walked away and gave her the clear signal that he is not up retaliation.

She should have listened and left him alone.

Instead she just kept on throwing stones. Bang, bang bang. Wouldn't let it lie. Kept throwing stones no matter how many times he walked away.

His peaceful approach didn't stop her. So finally after all them stones, he ended up throwing back a single brick.

It wasn't his first choice but she didn't back off when he ignored her, so he resorted to playing her at her own game and firing a shot back. Hopefully that will stop her baiting him now.

It's a shame when people ignore your desire for peace and keep pushing you, but it's no surprise when they eventually crack and say/do something out of sheer exhaustion/frustration as Jim did.

Hopefully they can both move on from it now.
