The fact people claim not to care about it is a good thing, yet the same people don't go into threads on soaps-they-don't-watch to announce they don't care about this soap, so maybe part of them does care. Or else they wouldn't be in this thread.
Anyway one of the main reasons for Ellen coming out, it's for her own mental well being.
Also a high visibility of lgbt in a society emphasizes how normal and every day people of a different sexuality are. When we hide, then it allows crazies to push whatever agendas they want on society, claiming we're bad or wicked, that we should be imprisoned, or we're like that because we haven't met the right man. If everyone who wasn't a heterosexual hid, then there would be no one to speak out. No role models, no successful actresses/business/teachers... we could point to highlight that because you love someone of the same gender, well that doesn't make you a bad person.
So who benefits if famous people don't come out and stay in the closet? Not the lgbt community for sure.
What Ellen did could cost her a lot of roles in hollywood, sure she's made a lot of friends and supporters, but even judging from this thread, she's upset some people.
