Default Waterboarding

What are your thoughts on waterboarding?

I've been reading about it for these last few days and omg it's really scary. I never knew it was this bad, just thought it was like having your head underwater. But apparently being subjected to it for just a few seconds can be the worst thing you'll ever experience

I mean just look at this quote from someone who tried it on himself.. he knew he was going to be safe and it was all under his control, yet genuinely thought he was drowning and close to death

Quote:
I'll put it this way. If I had the choice of being waterboarded by a third party or having my fingers smashed one at a time by a sledgehammer, I'd take the fingers, no question.

It's horrible, terrible, inhuman torture. I can hardly imagine worse. I'd prefer permanent damage and disability to experiencing it again. I'd give up anything, say anything, do anything.

The Spanish Inquisition knew this. It was one of their favorite methods.

It's torture. No question. Terrible terrible torture. To experience it and understand it and then do it to another human being is to leave the realm of sanity and humanity forever. No question in my mind.pp

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=448717
and then you have this video..

would you do it for £50,000?

I can't believe this is an actual method used by governments

I was really confused then, I was going to make a joke about boobs.

Then I realised I was thinking of motorboating.

Yes America uses it
so do Arabs

Some have died because they were not
able to get air into their mouth.

So you need to be able to punch their tummy
so the choke clears

I can see why its used
it gets results from those that do not Die.

Some that are top agents never speak
and Die.
They are the Best

Disgusting practice (but then so are all forms of torture), anyone that carries it out is a worthless human being and anyone that agrees with it should have it done to them so they change their opinion

Back in a State of War
Nukes in Japan by America were Evil 1945

In a State of Terrorists
attacking UK, USA , France etc
they have to get the info Jack
sure its Evil
but gets results from the ones that do not choke to death

I'm a fan of anything that makes the world a safer place to live in. And if that means waterboarding terrorists, I'm all for it.

Waterboarding doesn't make the world a safer place though, and hasn't provided any information or intelligence of value. Mainly because when you're torturing people, they will pretty much tell you anything you want to hear to get them to stop.

You wouldn't know that though, would you. I mean, the security services don't openly report as far as I'm aware. And if something's not working, generally it's stopped.

There is a way we can know though, because it's been such a prickly issue in America, that American conservatives have tried desperately to find any piece of information given up through these practices, and they haven't found one. They initially tied the finding of OBL to information procured through this, but it was proved to be false reporting.

Like I said, the security services wouldn't be discussing it with the press or anyone else.

The release information from time to time yes... but the vast majority of what they do the public will probably never know.

When torture is being used (and that's what it is), then be under no illusions that any success story they could get out of it would have been used in propaganda. Neocons have tried desperately to find a success story to justify the practice. Like I said, security shares it's success stories, and the minute OBL was killed, they tried to claim it was information obtained from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (the sweaty Ron Jeremy lookalike) using waterboarding, that made the operation a success.

We can disagree about the potential merits of it, but I find it difficult to pretend that waterboarding has been keeping us safe.

I'll try and dig out a study I read a while ago, that highlighted torture in particular as being ineffective.

Yes, we will have to agree to disagree.

The world may also be safer if countries didn't arbitrarily use unreliable torture methods with no accountability. I'm not happy to have that sort of stuff carried out in my name ostensibly to protect people when that is far from guaranteed.

The world may also be a safer place if some countries didn't back terrorists, fund them, train them and send them out into the world to endeavour to drag the rest of the world back to the stone age. Lots of things are done in your name that you will never know about in order to protect you. If you're not happy about that, well, you can't please all of the people all of the time. If the world was a level playing field, if everyone in the world was accountable and responsible then there wouldn't be any need for this kind of stuff.

Eh? I have no issue with blaming Blair for the needless Iraq war/war on terror. It's not a labour slogan, it's common parlance, young man. So turn your rage mode down a notch.
