I don't know, but I think the producer picks it after a meeting with other crew people.

I couldn't find anything on XF, but I found something about American Idol, and a producer on that said that he would pick the first song to be an upbeat one rather than a ballad. And they alternate who starts first and last.

And yep I agree that Paul must have been picked first because he's really dependable and has a strong voice.

..yeah, I think maybe they chose Paul to go first because they could see that his performance would be strong and then maybe they alternate each contestant from there but never putting one first or last if they're having a weak week...
