They went too far with that stupidity didn't they? some of the specials were far too much like the one where they were at Dave and Denise's house for Christmas dinner and then the one they went on holiday to the caravan, when you watch the older ones you wonder why on earth they took it in that direction.

Yes, exactly. They took Dave's stupidity to ridiculous levels where you wondered how he had a functioning brain to begin with.

Denise went from a bit of a lazy cow to a moron. The whole thing went from a funny, well observed comedy to a farce.
