They couldn't laugh it off, it was done with intent to mock, goad and intentionally upset everybody in the house.
He got rid of a decent man by the most destructive goading, by sexually waggling his tongue at a elderly straight man and by calling people racist and homophobic.
You don't laugh at that off.
