It wouldn't matter what your GP did or said, which to be fair between them and other organisations like AA is quite a lot, until you're in the right headspace to quit they are pis*ing in the wind.

yes and sadly often when you hit that headspace you are already dead, its the lucky ones that end up in aa or na at rock bottom, rockbottom for many and forgive me vanessa, is death.

Well I don't know about that, some unfortunately lose the will to keep on trying but everyone's different, when it clicks it clicks, it might be a year in or 20yrs. The chance of a full recovery depends entirely on physical, mental and emotional damage.
