EastEnders couple Kat and Alfie Moon will be featured in their own drama series in 2016.

Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie (Shane Richie) will be taking a break from Walford later this year, but viewers will be able to follow them as they head to Ireland to start a new life in a spinoff show.

Although the couple have been estranged ever since Kat discovered that Alfie was responsible for the fire that left her badly burned, they will soon reunite and have the opportunity to put the past behind them.

The six-part drama series has been created by EastEnders' executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins, and it will be written and produced by the EastEnders team.

Speaking about the new drama, Treadwell-Collins said: "In the next few weeks on EastEnders, viewers will witness several huge twists for Kat and Alfie Moon that will change their lives forever.

"Now is the perfect time to take two of EastEnders' most beloved and enduring characters out of their comfort zone as they head to Ireland to search for answers to some very big questions.

"My team here are very excited about creating a whole new drama that stands apart from EastEnders, while taking our style of storytelling to a place of stories, myth, secrets and immeasurable beauty."

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, added: "Life is anything but dull for favourite EastEnders couple Kat and Alfie as they embark on a new life in Ireland in this exciting drama series. Rest assured, their rollercoaster isn't set to end any time soon."

Speaking of the new drama, Shane Richie said: "Both Jessie and I are absolutely thrilled to be given this amazing opportunity. To have a whole drama focused around Kat and Alfie is a huge honour for us both and we just can't wait to start filming."

Jessie Wallace added "I have always loved working on EastEnders, so when I heard of this new drama to take Kat and Alfie outside of Walford, I couldn't believe our luck. To be exploring the next chapter for Kat as well as working alongside my best mate, Shane, is a dream come true and a huge compliment."

Last night's episode of the soap saw Kat attempt to take her own life as she reached her lowest ebb, following a devastating build-up of troubles.

The emotional scenes are the start of a brand new storyline for Kat as she begins to face up to her past. Absolutely Fabulous actress June Whitfield will appear in a guest role in May as part of the ongoing storyline.

Kat and Alfie's new series will begin filming this autumn and is due to transmit as six hour-long episodes in 2016.

This whole thing with dean and the craters is starting to do my tree in now. It's just going round in circles. I was hoping when Stan and Dean were alone, stan would say something like "I know you did it" and Dean would work out some form of retribution for himself that way. Obvs not.

Ronnie has now been a coma for far longer than soap's normally coma people for..I'm just annoyed that when she comes round she's got to deal with Roxy and Charlie doing it behind her back.
What happened to Denise being a raging alcoholic and unable to deal with looking after Patrick?
And when the hell is this wrongful arrest supposed to be happening with Lucy's murder?
Oh...and Stacey still has that key. How about not fannying around with giving the Carter's more to do and sort out the storylines you started 6 months ago or more

Scott Maslen who played Jack Branning in the BBC One Soap EastEnders has revealed he turned down the chance to return to the programme.

Scott told sources that there’s elements of snobbery to those actors and actresses who work on the successful soap.

lol all good points. I assumed the Shabnam/Dean storyline was going to be the thing that helped prove that Dean was a rapist, that Shabnam was going to say he'd raped her too but it doesn't seem like it now

I know but they obviously did it for some sort of a reason and the fact that Deans the dad must be significant. I wonder was Shabnam so freaked out by it because he raped her too and she's like tried to blank that bit out or something?
