Kick the bucket is an early reference to hanging yourself. The bucket is what you stand on to tie the rope around your neck, then you kick it from under your feet. Although it can mean just 'to die', the phrase is referring to the act of committing suicide.

This is so ****ing ridiculous, seriously. Why the **** are people signing a petition to axe the storyline? "Clutha is still raw" it was two years ago you morons. Why do people take things so seriously? Why go out of their way to complain when they can easily just turn the television off? This isn't about Emmerdale airing the storyline, it's about these idiots wanting a bit of publicity for their charity so they can get recognition, and more importantly, money.

Nobody complained about Coronation Street using a fire to generate ratings, which kill more people than helicopters.
