SHUT DOWN SEAWORLD!



All cetaceans (Whales, dolphins and porpoises) have highly developed social skills, self-awareness very similar to that of a human. The pod has a very close and strong emotional ties to each other as humans do. The pod structure varies in different species but all whales and dolphins work together in taking care of their young and sick. The emotional ties are so strong that members of a pod will follow a stranded whale's distress call and strand themselves also. We have proof of that in so many instances of beached whales all over the world.

It is because of the close similarities cetaceans exhibit with the humans that makes it so much harder to bear the atrocities committed against them. Cetaceans are intelligent, sentient beings and should NOT be confined to small concrete tanks for lifetime. If Sea World really and truly cares for these animals, as it professes, it should set them all free, back to the oceans where they belong. It is really a sorry state of affairs that human beings still rely on animals for their amusement in this modern era!

There is absolutely nothing educational about seeing captive, starved Cetaceans forced to perform tricks for the sake of food! Everyone should read 'Rekindling the Waters- the truth about swimming with dolphins' by Leah Lemieux, then they would know EXACTLY how these animals feel, stuck in small tanks. People will then understand the horror and the unnecessary tragedy that a whole pod of dolphins go through just so that a few of their family can land up in Sea World or Oceanariums around the world for public entertainment! The rest of the pod just perish.

As long as there is a demand for these whales and dolphins by Sea World and other Oceanariums, then there WILL be people around the world trying to make a easy buck. The public who go to see the dolphin and whale shows and Sea World which puts on these shows, are silently endorsing the killing of pods and pods of dolphins. It is a lucrative business for dolphin and whale catchers. These are people with no ethics, who have no compunction about subjecting these innocent, intelligent, defenseless creatures to horrifying ordeal of capture. Who cares how many die and suffer as long as they harvest a few to sell?


If Sea World wants to educate the public about Cetaceans they should make a 3D show about these animals, just like they have a 3D show about Sesame Street characters, instead of having live shows.

Trevor Long, Marine Science Director at Sea World Gold Coast says: "Dolphins aren't some amazing creature, in the wild they just rape and rape and rape". (Quoted from Gold Coast Bulletin interview January 2015).

Please help us to speak up for the captive performing dolphins at Sea World on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

We love them rescuing cetaceans but we loathe them keeping dolphins as captives in their aquaprison.

The dolphins need to be rehabilitated and freed or taken to a safe sanctuary/bay/cove paid for by Sea World to live out their lives without human interference.

India, Croatia, Hungary New York, South Carolina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Nicaragua, Slovenia, Switzerland, Brazil, Luxembourg, Norway and the U.K have already banned cetaceans in captivity and so far there are over 17,000 signatures on the petition and a Facebook page with over 10,000 followers. Also on Twitter @seaworldisevil with over 6,600 followers

The dolphins are caught from the ocean and brought to tanks/lagoons and are also bred in captivity where they are forced to perform for paying customers and given dead fish but only if they do tricks. All to make money for greedy Sea World business people.

Petitions like this are largely pointless. It's a corporation, you gotta hit them where it hurts, the profit margins.

Just got to hope the bad press keeps doing the work in discrediting the place and putting off customers.

Exactly why protests exist, if their events are disrupted enough and there is enough public outcry then they will listen at some point. (though they are a hugely immoral corporation and it will take a lot to close it, but never impossible).

I've been to the SeaWorld in Orlando many times, but after the Tilikum incident in 2010 the times I've been since then there's been an obvious change in the way they handle the shows etc. It's definitely not the place it used to be though, and part of that probably comes from the highlighting of the treatment of the whales and how they're captured from that film.

I remember seeing a video somewhere, filmed by an audience member, of Tilikum (a few years after the incident occurred) not 'performing', just logging, looking quite distressed at the gate during one of the shows just waiting out for it to end, so sad to watch.

I always thought that creating a sea sanctuary would be best for the Orcas. They have lived in captivity their entire lives, so won't survive just being thrown back into the sea, they've got to the point where they need human care or they will die. So a sea sanctuary would be a pretty good thing to do. It would allow the Orcas to live in a natural environment, one far bigger than the tanks they currently live in, and they would still be taken care of and monitored by humans who would care for them until they die. Heck, you could go one step further and turn that into an attraction of its own so it makes money in some way. Have a visitor centre, an exhibition about the animals and even build an underwater tunnel/viewing area.

The orcas live out a happier life, the public get to see them in more of a natural environment and it could be a huge game changer for the industry. As orcas are not just exclusive to SeaWorld. I went to Loro Parque in Tenerife in June and watched an orca show there, pretty much a copycat for the SeaWorld shows, and I noticed the animals had scratches and marks all over them (like shown in the Blackfish film). I know we're all targeting SeaWorld and SeaWorld is suffering, although this is a far bigger problem, a worldwide one, and I think there needs to be more recognition of this.
