We currently have out of date computers for about 10% of the school at a time, phones can be the answer to moving forward and keep education with the real world

..taking away a free classroom technology resource is restricting technology....there is not enough funding for schools to provide the technology that's needed..in an ideal world, eh...

..it's also placing no trust on students by 'policing' them for maybe a few who may misuse these things...and yet strangely, we want them to be 'individuals' when they leave school and to be able to make good decisions for themselves rather than being policed, which is not what school is about...I personally have more faith in young people than to think they need things to be removed from them during lesson time because most of them actually do want to learn rather than text their friends...

I never had to turn my phone off in school, mine was jail broken and tethered, so I could only turn it back on if it was plugged into my computer, so the teachers let me keep it on.

Although i see both sides, they shouldn't need their phones during lessons, but don't waste precious time telling them to turn it off, just let it be. There are far too many disruptions in the classroom anyway *remembers the countless times the whole class had to wait for 1 person to stop talking*

I know it's sad but it's also true with a lot of teenagers, they become so entwined with their technology, i'm battling my daughter at the moment about the amount of time she spends on her laptop/phone, and if i let her have her way she would be on it til 4 in the morning, she would have no contact with us, she would never go out, she would completely isolate herself, she is also a grade A student, has a beautiful caring gentle soul, she is the best daughter you could wish for and yet technology is taking away her childhood, because she will not venture outside on her own, and explore her surroundings.

In class when on computers they all try to get away with playing games rather than get on with their work, teenagers push the boundaries and try to get away with murder, if phones were allowed in class i dread to think what would happen, and what of the children who can't afford phones?

It can't be taking it away if it was never there in the first instance though.

The issue is not 'do schools have enough internet resources' is it?
The concern regarding the appropriate use of mobile phones in schools has gone on since the advent of mobile phones I suspect.
Teachers shouldn't have to be wasting teaching time on any one pupil who may abuse the privilege.
In the adult world there are times where mobiles are not allowed too, if they are mature enough to accept that personal items have a time and a place then I say that makes for a well rounded individual.
If this model of perfect trust was working there would be no need for further intervention would there? Somewhere somehow it isn't obviously.
