It's 5p, it all goes to charity, it helps the environment at the same time

And as far as I can tell it's working quite well, everything other person brings their own now

....well no because I just used your thread../get them apples..(in a trolley/basket/bag etc..)...actually it's not thread worthy I don't think, just something I recalled reading a few days ago and kind of connected because trolleys/baskets etc...it's that people will risk fines for stealing and have a criminal record because they disagree with the 5p charge for bags...

i don't think 5p for a bag is reasonable. If a supermarket expects me to buy their products, they had better provide me with the means to carry it home at no cost

Just wait till this affects the inflation targets ... it will soon be reversed

Doubtful this has been going in Ireland for years, people get used to it, and yes the price has gone up

..the thing is though that it's not the supermarkets and shops who decided the charge would apply..the charge was set and they have to enforce it, they have no choice with that...but what I do think though, bitontheslide, is that they could offer an environmentally friendly alternative to keep loyalty...it's strange how some supermarkets always had boxes at the end of the aisles or in stacks for customers to take and use instead of using a bag and now in my supermarket, the boxes have all gone now...now when they really should be there...

Fair enough, no objection to taking measures to reduce environmental impact, but all plastic bags these days are bio degradable, so this charge is not for the good of the environment. As Ammi pointed out, the cardboard boxes that used to be available, no longer are, so a concious decision has been made to hit the shopper with a charge or force them to behave in a particular way when there is zero environmental justification. It is quite frankly, all a load of bollocks

1) They're not allowed to absorb the charge, that would defeat the purpose.
