Calling a cat "Tiger" is ironic... calling a Yorkshire Terrier "Tiger" is ironic... calling a dog that has a (deserved or otherwise) reputation as an aggressive breed "Tiger" is a deliberate statement that you "have a tough dog".

It IS tragic what happened to the guy, and you're right that it might be a rescue dog that they've not had for long, but beyond that... well... happy, well-trained dogs don't maul their masters
