I see where the OP is coming from. I've known a lot of gay men around his age behave very similarly, putting on a show about their sexuality. I think it has a lot to do with them growing up and discovering their sexuality at a very difficult time in history for gay people. So to be able to be openly gay, and show pride in it, is a much bigger deal to guys in their 40's/50's than it is to younger guys. And so I think that his innuendo's etc, are just his way of trying to show that he doesn't have to hide his sexuality. That's my theory anyway. It might be grating and annoying for other people, who may not have had the same life experiences as John, but I think I can understand why he does it.

I don't know if you're looking at it a bit too deeply though, like again if we compare it to this forum, men of that age, whether straight or gay(and most of the older men on this forum are straight) seem to love an innuendo
