Chris Eubank Snr was giving son tactical tips NOT protecting Nick Blackwell, insists Johnny Nelson

Johnny Nelson believes Chris Eubank Senior was NOT trying to protect Nick Blackwell when he told his son to stop punching him in the face.

Nelson insists that Eubank Senior could only see Eubank Junior winning the fight through a stoppage if he continued to hit Blackwell in the body.

The doctor ordered that the fight was to be stopped in the 10th round due to the severe swelling on the face of Blackwell, handing Eubank Junior the British title.

But it was after the fight when Blackwell collapsed after suffering a bleed to the brain.

But speaking on talkSPORT, Nelson said: "What Chris said was, 'the only way you are going to stop him is throwing shots to the body'. It wasn't out of concern [for Nick Blackwell] that Chris was saying don't go to the face.

"He was saying the only way you are going to stop this guy is by going to the body. That's what he was saying.

Blackwell was left in an induced coma after the fight but Eubank Senior had appeared to tell his son to end the face shots

Johnny Nelson believes Chris Eubank Senior was NOT trying to protect Nick Blackwell when he told his son to stop punching him in the face.

The doctor ordered that the fight was to be stopped in the 10th round due to the severe swelling on the face of Blackwell, handing Eubank Junior the British title.

But it was after the fight when Blackwell collapsed after suffering a bleed to the brain.

He has since been placed into an induced coma, in which he remains, as he continues to recover in hospital.

In the latter stages of the fight, Eubank Senior was seen telling his son where he should angle his punches and he confirmed that he was doing it to protect Blackwell.

"Let's not get silly and jump on this bandwagon and say Chris saw something we didn't see. If Chris could have got Junior to knock him out, he would have got him to knock him out.

"He knew Nick Blackwell was very strong and he was trying to get him stopped to the body. Obviously it is a concern but it was not his major concern."

Nelson also believes that the referee was right not to stop the fight earlier.

He said: "Chris would have seen one or two things and thought this kid is tough but nobody at any stage until Nick Blackwell was taken out on a stretcher saw it at all."
