If she was so vexed about it then surely she should have made an appointment with HR and raised the issue there, we work in a democracy and if she went through the proper channels and the company had then canvassed the staff a proper solution could be found, rather than trial by media

what a silly girl

absolutely disagree again, this is an issue probably alot of women just put up with, good on her for bringing it out into the open, might encourage other women to stand up for themselves and not be treated like we're back in the 50's as Livia says

Thank You very much for proving my point, the only reason you want women to wear heels is because you view them as some sort object for you to ogle over..........so the only benefit of having a female receptionist wearing heels is so the men will find her more attractive, I know your post is a jokey one but that is exactly what the case is, there is no other reason why it would be written in there as a required piece of clothing and I find draconian and disgusting tbh

Yes the soul reason you have an attractive girl on reception is because men are in most senior positions and the idea is that if the people coming to your building to do business think the receptionist is hot then they may give you business

I think that covers the psychology?

I did not make this rule btw

That's changing. A lot of woman are rising to the top these days. Do women expect their sexual preference be pandered to by reception staff? No. Because, again, it's not the 1950s.

..she was sent home from work though../given a choice of either going out and purchasing some heeled shoes or going home so it didn't really sound as though they were open to any discussion about it...

..she's an actress apparently/a TV actress who I presume was doing some temping work while she wasn't acting so it would seem unfortunate for them that they chose to discriminate against someone who would be quite happy to pursue it publicly..but that's a good thing that she has and highlighted it because it's a discriminating employment rule...codes of dress for males and females can differ in the workplace but they have to be reasonable to the job being done and having to wear heels for a reception job isn't 'reasonable', so long as smart shoes are being worn...

And that is disgusting and demeaning and thankfully women like this woman are highlighting it so we can hopefully stamp out that revolting attitude towards modern women in our society. And hopefully my own daughter will live in a world that will treat her more like a human being and not an object

Where does it say she agreed to it? I've read the article and it says the company had the dress code but as she was employed through an agency she may not have been aware and the article says she was told on the first day that she had to wear them so if this is the case, she neither "signed up" or agreed to wear heels.

I do find it funny that everyone who agrees with the company is a man and would not be required to wear anything that is uncomfortable and/or damaging if used for long periods of time. Even sillier is the comparison that heels are not different to suits, if a suit is uncomfortable it means it doesn't fit you well, high heels are damaging regardless.

How is a sandwich board comparable? In this case the point of wearing the sandwich board IS THE JOB. A form of advertising.

In the case of this woman, how on earth does the type of footwear she has have anything to do with her job as a receptionist?

I've been put on reception duty a good few times in a previous job.

Are you telling me the 56 year old female manager who put me there did so because she wanted to ogle my caboose?
