It seems like Love Island is attracting more than just the generic Reality TV junkie. Lots of people I would never have thought would be interested in the show are watching it. It's quite surprising. Big Brother is stale in comparison to Love Island's new format, and dating is proving to be a successful theme in terms of constructed reality (Ex on the Beach, First Dates, etc.)

Mess I didn't realise how low last years series ratings were. The last week of LI averaged 1.6m and that's like 1m more than what last years Week 4 got :/

I watch both of them religiously every night. Im really enjoying Love Island this year but I will always be a bigger BB fan. I think that Love Island is only in its second season and is much much better than last year. I guess some people tire of Big Brother eventually ( I never will)

Of course, but don't forget C5 and BB were pushing this whole 'the game is changing' crap (which turned out to be totally meaningless as per usual) more than they have done for any of the themes in the past, so the 'new' concept was there, they just couldn't be bothered to promote it properly.

It's a shame because the content of the promo (mainly the trailers) were great, but they just relied on Rylan too much, barely aired the ad on C5 or their sister channels, didn't turn up to a Radio 1 interview, released five house pics on bloody Twitter. It was all pathetic

This series was never gonna hit 3m or anything like that but say it had launched to idk 1.7 or something, the officials might look even better than they do now and could've made the difference between shoddy production decisions to chase ratings and whether or not civilian BB has a future

Well that's the thing; it's not being respected because the viewers know it's an obvious attempt to try and be like these other shows.

Actually, the Georgina and Jackson storyline has been the most interesting part of the series to the people who also watch Love Island.

Love Island is getting a lot of press attention. I've never watched it but I've seen a lot of stories in the tabloids and media attention always drives up viewing figures

Meanwhile I haven't read anything about BB outside of here and other BB fan sites

Love island has a format and people can follow it. Just recently there was a lesbian kiss and viewing went up. BB has full blown same sex sex and figures go down. Im gussing its the way its done. LI does it classy, BB does it smutty.

BB used to be a bout fun and games and the odd argument, now its all about fights and sex with producer manipulation. We had TOWIE, now we have TOWIBB

Reasons IMHO for Love Island's success :

• On ITV, a bigger channel than channel5 so higher profile. THE PR releases to the media write them selves, sex on TV is a boon for the Sun, SnapChat kids. BB's biggest story this year will be Marco shagging Laura. Alex eating cereal? Not so much. More emphasis on sex and sexual controversy , that's the whole point, which appeals to tabloids eg Miss UK is stripped of her crown for having sex on TV was a big story.
  
• LOVE ISLAND appeals to straight men (who on the whole hate reality TV in general) whilst the Euros 2016 are having a night off. Blokes don't want to watch Hughie being wanked off by Ryan, that's gay guys niche viewing . Straight guys also don't want to see Andy in bed with boyfriend. Why would a bloke watch guys like Sam or Hughie on BB when you can see hot girls on Love Island. Far too many gay men in BB, 4 (Hughie wouldn't know his way around a woman's body if his life depended on it. Let's not be PC, let's cut this bisexual crap, let's be honest he's gay.)
  
• Everyone is good looking on LI. No one cares about the plots or stories, it's the promise of voyeuristic sex. Generic hot girls in bikinis, long hair, lip fillers and fake tits. Generic gym guys with crappy chav sleeve tattoos which passes as sexy in 2016. On BB having a good looking girl is pointless unless there's a sexual undercurrent, so Emma and Victoria are pretty but unsexy, so have no value, might as well cast a less attractive female with more personality
  
• Girl on girl snogs get TV ratings and TV gossip, gay male stuff repulsives the mainstream. Sex sell. Gay male sex doesn't.
  
• BB has middle aged people so will repel the SnapChat kids who don't want to see women who could be their gran discussing sex eg Jayne
  
• ITV set it up last year as a reality TV spoiler against C5 Big Brother. They didn't quite get it right then, but have made a few tweaks and promoted it heavily so they can steal viewers from BB. This is why this BB feels like club 18-30 ��, trying to compete with LI
  
• Got the brother of Corrie star Ryan Thomas (and an Emmerdale star too) - this is biggest show ON ITV so will get some added viewers and cross promotion

I think Power Trip and Timebomb have really damaged BBUK, and the producers managed to destroy the seasons by fixing the nominations rule and generally running the show into the ground. The fact is the damage is bound to appear now even though this season is a slight improvement ... I think rather than do cheap twists like "Annihilation week" and use manipulated drama the producers need to recognise what went wrong and how to ultimately bring people back. Less is more springs to mind I guess? Love Island is messy as hell but it works for its format, whereas BBUK is trying too hard to be mashup of Ex on the beach/love island/TOWIE etc. and it needs to remember why it was popular to begin with.

Sadly Frow and the production team can't recognise they're the main problem with the show, and as they've failed to change their ways for 3 years now I think it's time to scrap them all or pull the plug and give BBUK to a channel that wants it and will produce better quality seasons

People are saying Love island is on itv so it is getting more viewers. But it is on iTV 2 who normally get less viewers than channel 5.

Yesteday love island got 1.3 million but bb had 1m
