Just touching on what you've written, I think
higher of most people that go on these shows with arms wide open because it takes a lot of skin and self-esteem to be able to subject yourself to the type of vitriol that occurs online these days. It's not really the core audience as much as it's the
mob mentality that arises from it.
I don't know though that I could ever fully associate someone's forum personality with their role on TV unless they intended to mirror that online aspect part of their persona as well. Then it would be very hard for people here to not take more personally when they say something **** up.
It has to be surreal to see a friend or family member in edited bits on television. I always try to remember that those two identities are not one in the same, that underneath they're humans trying to adapt to a role. It's natural for us to socialize and work within the roles we are often arbitrarily given in most environments, so once on TV, they're not necessarily held or beholden to the same rules they hold at home or in another role... especially if it is on TV.
I think at least more than few fans of this show would realize the difference and come to their defense for that reason. If it got
too personal though, I'm like you, I'd go offline or would keep my mouth shut

But it would be hard not to come to their defense once I see what is being written...

Of course... it would also depend on who is was!
