Although, obviously both films had very different goals with style etc, Depp's is more in keeping with the book imo.

Yeah I agree. The visual style of the Burton version is, in my opinion, better but the most important part of the story is misunderstood. Depp's Wonka is clearly mentally unstable / insane. The message seems to be that his view of the world is warped or distorted in his madness. Which misses the point entirely... a point that the first film completely nails. Wonka is NOT insane, in fact he is completely sane. He sees the world for exactly what it is and it makes him angry. He is an angry, cynical man who is sick of the world and of people... and he masks it with a smile and passive-aggressive humour. Which is why the first film manages to actually be darker than the remake, without the visual style being dark at all.

I thought the original film was quite good but I didn't think it was as good as the book. Probably because the book was one of my favourites when I was young, and the film could never live up to that expectation and be how I imagined it.

I haven't really watched the remake properly. I've seen bits of it.

I remember reading the book after having seen the gene wilder movie as a kid... and thinking they were not the same story
Having said that, and while I really actually love both versions of the movie... the original wins for me.
