They were outlawed yes, so why is it surprising there is a backlash to them being found back on sale? And to add insult to injury in a place that is supposed to be testament to all things British!
As a Brit I'm massively offended that the owner would dare suggest that is an item that defines my heritage.
Do not twist my words.... There was no justification of death threats, my view of what the item may represent could never in any rational scenario be mistaken for that.
Whatever you feel regarding other examples of subjugation they are for another thread.
