John is usually on the right of Edward as a way to know which one is which.
So it would in your incident be John who mentioned the shoes and Edward defusing anything.

They look out for each other, John usually controls more and Edward leans on John more.

That's how I do it,even onstage John is more often than not to the right of Edward.
Especially too when they do their '' I'm John and he's Edward and together we are Jedward'' trademark intro.
