Nail on the head there, in my opinion. His "star" was rising at one point and then he was unceremoniously booted out of US popular culture and back onto low viewership British council-telly. He is straight up emulating Hopkins, I would imagine quite consciously, because he can see that it's been getting her attention (and, funnily enough, getting her onto US TV...) lately.
