There's no need for the Doctor to change at all. They could just make each actor a different Time Lord. But that's the show so get over it.

The show has changed pretty much every part of itself many times to survive over 54 years and this is a change it has not experimented with thus far and if the show is in desperate need of anything it's a major overhaul.

And if done right, this could turn the shows fortunes around.

Trying to replicate a past era would not have worked.
