Do you remember British Rail?

Yes I do but remember too BR was deliberately underfunded by the government until it collapsed giving the Tories the excuse to privatise it. Any profits made by BR were siphoned off by government. The government deliberately failed to invest in BR. There are two sides to the BR debate.

I have travelled on continental railways more recently Belgian several times and that's nationalised. The trains are clean, mostly double deckers and have never seen anyone having the stand even in rush hour and is affordable and dirt cheap. That's the other side of a nationalised railway system.
