It's a massive waste of time, you're either forcing people to delay their lives (and potentially end/ruin them) with military service or with pointless busy work in the guise of charity. It's utterly pointless either way.

Tell me the actual benefits then, What is the benefits of wasting a year of someone's life in military service that they do not want or might not be suitable for (and could easily cause them harm or death) OR having them waste time working in a Charity shop when they could be in training or forging their own career?

There's no benefits to it. It's just a waste of time that's designed to punish the younger generations.
