For a country supposedly crawling out of the ruins of the Brexit vote, the U.K. has been having a strikingly good year so far. The number of people working stands at a record high, and income inequality is approaching a 30-year low, according to the Office for National Statistics. New orders for manufacturers are at their highest level in a generation, and employers in general are struggling to find enough staff to cope with demand. Even the (relatively new) national happiness index stands at a peak.

When Britain voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, a very different future was forecast. Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, declared that Britain had just “collapsed: politically, monetarily, constitutionally and economically.” But the plague of locusts has yet to show up—which is odd, given how many experts predicted that a victory for Brexit would bring catastrophe. Now, almost two years after the vote, the picture is clearer, and there is plenty of evidence to challenge the conventional wisdom, for those with eyes to see it.

Well of course things aren't bad at the moment, nothing has changed because we haven't left anything as of yet.

Reading this article gives me the image of a boat hurtling towards a waterfall but no one's worried because at the moment everything is all lovely and well and it's better to be happy than to accept the ****storm that's coming because people don't want to regret the way they voted.

Looking on the bright side if we weren't leaving we'd only be giving it the EU anyway so what's to miss?

I just hate that they focus on broad strokes and not the "whys". Like income inequality lessening... OK yes it sounds great... And the year on year increasing minimum wage is great for those on the minimum wage BUT consider why income inequality is lessening;

Minimum wage is increasing steadily to reach their Ł9ish target. OK. Meanwhile... Most of us who are on ABOVE minimum wage haven't seen a meaningful pay rise in nearly a decade. My hourly pay has gone up by maybe 30p in the last 4 years . So that's why the inequality is lessening... Because minimum wage is catching up with everyone else's wages which are completely ****ing stagnant. Woohoooo.

Yeah, it's a bit like saying the gender pay gap is improving, by slashing the higher paid male employees.

The "gender pay gap" is caused by different working habits, so there's no way to change it without lessening people's choices in some way...
