Win brownie points off Derek? Science HATED Derek near the end of his stay, his stuff with Orlaith was all on his own. If anything, Derek was trying to win brownie points off other people by attacking Orlaith. Science didn't follow any crowd at all and his stuff with Orlaith was all his own issues.
